On Thursday, volunteers started painting the interior of the new Nuevos Horizontes women shelter here in Xela. The new shelter is a much improved space from the older shelter. Much of the funding for the center came from the Basque Government along with other grants and funds from donors. The new facility has 12 Dorms for the women and children to inhabit once it opens. Along with a larger kitchen and cafeteria, the new building took over two years of planning and about 15 months to be built.

Xela has been hosting an exhibition by Juan Manuel Díaz Puerta, 45, an Argentinian painter. He visited Guatemala in 2009 for the first time and came back in July, 2010 upon an invitation from other Argentinian artist who live in Guatemala. After spending couple of months in Guatemala City and having an exhibition there in July and August, he came to Xela in November. Currently he has an exhibition during month of January and probably February at Efrain Recinos Centro Cultural in Zone 2. The show has paintings both in black and white and in color.

Related to art scene in Guatemala, he commented that he appreciates the quality of the artists here in Guatemala and he also pointed that “Hay un cambio en mi arte aparte de venir a Guatemala. Me estimula a ser mas precioso en el dibujo”. (Since I came to Guatemala, there is a change in my art. It stimulates me to draw more precisely.) About his personal work, he said, ” Pinto lo que me gusta visualmente. En el hecho de pintar está la voluntad de ser parte de lo que pinto”. (I paint what I visually like. In fact, act of painting is to be willing to become a part of the painting itself.)

After Guatemala, he is planning to visit Barcelona, Spain. But it seems like he will have another visit to Guatemala on his way to South America back from Spain. Juan Manuel said, “No se van a librar tan facil de mi”. (I don’t know if they are gonna let me go that easy.)

If you would like to see some beautiful art, you should definitely take a short walk from the center and visit this art show. Definitely, vale la pena! (it’s worth it!) Juan Manuel has his studio at the art gallery, therefore visitors can be lucky enough to see him painting, too. The gallery is located at Avenida Jesús Castillo 3-24 Zone 2. Exhibition hours: Monday-Friday 9-12 and 2-6 and Saturdays 9-12.

From graffiti to mural

If you walk a few blocks from the center, Xela can offer you some interesting scenes. One of those is waiting at the corner of 15th Avenue and 5th Street. On one side there are graffitis and on the other side there is a picture of an indigenous man, that is painted in a very traditional style. They look really cool next to each other.
