What to Do - Salvino Terranova

So many of us have incredibly busy lives, I am often thankful for the moments of downtime that I have. Then again, I think we all know the feeling of boredom that can come over us when we aren’t in constant motion. This makes me think of the many vendors in the markets all over town, that have a lot of downtime. Of course they have busy hours of the day, when they hopefully sell much of what they have to offer. But also, they must have hours of time when there is nothing to do. My friends make fun of me for keeping my old phone only because it has Tetris on it, but I bet you that a few of these market vendors totally understand why I would.

Day After Day by Luna McCarthy

Day in, day out, the vendors are at the market. Come rain or shine, they are there, dedicated to selling their goods, no matter how great their stall is or how tiny their baskets are. In so many ways, I admire their tenacity and fortitude.

More Market Finds by Jose Moreno

What are these? Where can you find them? What can you put in them? And most importantly, why are they so brightly colored? Heh heh…I love the local, tipico stuff that you can buy in the markets, although sometimes I have a hard time explaining to the vendors that I already have a house full of them.

Chi Chi by Salvino Terranova

Daytrips are so lovely and easy to take when there are so many villages with interesting things to see around Xela. This photo was taken at the semi-famous market (in front of the church) by reader Salvino Terranova on one such trip to the town of Chichicastenango.

Mas Pina! by Jose Moreno

Pina seems to be the National Fruit here…we use it in everything from liquados to pizza to desserts. There aren’t many things better than to be able to buy a fresh pineapple on the street and suck the juice right out of it on a hot Xela afternoon!

Mugs by Luna McCarthy

In keeping with my love of markets and all things “house-y”, I must say that I have a huge appreciation for how the vendors in the markets sort and display their wares. Most of the time, everything is displayed in such neat and space-efficient ways, that not only do I marvel at the goods themselves, but at how they are presented. I bet that the vendors would be super worthy Tetris opponants!

Off Market Day by Luna McCarthy

Most people go to the market on Friday in San Fransisco el Alto, to make a day trip, perhaps to buy some textiles or some traje. Although many people don’t go on “off-market” days, just to hang out, this is exactly when this picture was taken. The classic church stands in the background, while there is a vestige of a market…NOT the actual market, but there ARE vendors who sell fabric, buttons and all kinds of sewing accessories and the like. It is certainly a different sight than full-on market day, when you can’t even see the ground!

A Few (More) of My Favorite Things by Luna McCarthy

Continuing my love of purchasing all things “housey”…La Demo of course, has such a marvelous selection of house-type stuff. I am always finding something there that I didn’t realize that I need, but that I DO need…like a new strainer or kettle or cute little cow mugs or a spoon with holes in it or…well, need I say more?

Boy Working in the Flores Market by Jose Moreno

My apologies for not posting yesterday, I had a bit of a family emergency. Thank goodness all is well, but I wasn’t unable to get online and post yesterday. Here is yesterday’s photo:

This insightful photo is from Jose Moreno and shows a young man with a worried look on his face, working and hoping that someone generous walks past him and buys his peanuts.

Tejido Social Part Two

Figurines by Luna McCarthy

Generally a photographer has the patience of a saint. One must in order to get the “good” shots. Then again, there are always times that you know a shot is gone, or that you have missed the moment. This happened to me this weekend with the Tejido Social. My apologies for not having more pictures to post; I erroneously thought there would be more public events today and chose to wait until today to take the bulk of my photos. It seems that most of the amazing events took place yesterday while I was working for Moonkat. Que lastima! Next event, I promise to try to be more on the ball.
