Volcan de Fuego

Volcan de Fuego by Jose Moreno

The big news today was the constan eruption of Volcan de Fuego, near Antigua, where up to 33,000 people were evacuated because of the ash and potential lava flows in surrounding villages. What you see here is the sky in Xela this afternoon, as captured by guest contributor Jose Moreno; the brown mixed in with the usual white, fluffy clouds is ash from the volcano.

Feria is Here

Feria is Here by Luna McCarthy

It’s that time again! Processions, cotton candy, too many people in the streets annnnd……marching bands!! Feria is upon us and everyone is happy. The downside is the noise pollution, while in some parts of the city it’s under control, but here in the center, I can currently hear 3 songs playing at once; one marimba, one bachata and the other is…Adele…? Yes. I LOVE feria!

This may be one of the most stunning and truly breathtaking shots I have ever seen of Xela. And yes, it REALLY is that beautiful here. It is.

What to Do - Salvino Terranova

So many of us have incredibly busy lives, I am often thankful for the moments of downtime that I have. Then again, I think we all know the feeling of boredom that can come over us when we aren’t in constant motion. This makes me think of the many vendors in the markets all over town, that have a lot of downtime. Of course they have busy hours of the day, when they hopefully sell much of what they have to offer. But also, they must have hours of time when there is nothing to do. My friends make fun of me for keeping my old phone only because it has Tetris on it, but I bet you that a few of these market vendors totally understand why I would.

Windows and Doors

Windows and Doors by Jose Moreno

Windows and doors give us a possibility of going “inside”…or outside for that matter. I read a very good quote the other day that said, that God often closes a door and opens a window, but we look so long at the closed door, we don’t even SEE the open window. Ahhh, sage advice.

Trecherous Roads by Jose Moreno

The roads in Xela, especially in the core are known for being beautiful and hilly and cobblestone and….dangerous. It just gives me even more appreciation for the lovely women here who wear heels all day long!

A New Angle by Jose Moreno

My apologies, I am not sure quite what happened…I posted for Thursday and Friday and came online this morning to see that NOTHING had been posted. Sorry faithful readers 🙁

I particularly love this shot by guest contributor Jose Moreno and the unusual angle from which it was shot. Can anyone guess where this photo was taken from? Jose, don’t give it away too quickly!

Gringo Corner - Manolo Escobar

This classic shot of el centro was taken and sent in by reader Manolo Escobar. I dubbed it the “gringo corner” because this is the most likely place to run into every possible tourist in Xela, perphaps even more than the park. Located on 13 Avenida, in-between the Rapi Servicio laundromat, Dispensa and El Cuartito, this is the place to be if you need to meet up with a tourist who is new to Xela.
