Beautiful Plague

Photo of Casa No'j in Black and White, stairs in front

They knew that the birds they see on “Casa No’j” basically the building are deteriorating sharply? this building as well as many in Xela and I guess everywhere who suffer from this “plaga” so cute, the problem also is that every day people give them food and therefore they remain there.

I did not want to talk about this but it’s worth mentioning and moreover I think this beautiful What do you think?

The Coolest Thing Ever by Luna McCarthy

This WAS one of the coolest things I have ever seen for feria. The park of course, was FULL of people and music and food and people laughing and dancing and children eating cotton candy. But THIS projection on the bank…made my night!

Windows and Doors by Jose Moreno

Windows and doors give us a possibility of going “inside”…or outside for that matter. I read a very good quote the other day that said, that God often closes a door and opens a window, but we look so long at the closed door, we don’t even SEE the open window. Ahhh, sage advice.

The Other Bookstore

The Other Bookstore by Jose Moreno

Many people in Xela are familiar with Vrisa, the bookstore in the center of town. But if you venture off a bit farther, out of the center (down 7 Calle) and turn left at the 15 Ave. bridge (puente de los chocoyos), then you will find this little treasure. Carrying books in both English and Spanish, they also have a very nice selection of art, posters and calendars.

Less of an Issue by NYChapin

This fantastic photo was sent in by NYChapin…and shows the lovely, VERY clean streets of San Juan La Laguna. There are some interesting comments in my original post The Real Issue, if you would like a little background. These streets may be the cleanest I have seen photographed, outside of some of the high profile areas in Antigua…thoughts?

Thanks for sending in this photo NYChapin!! It is beautiful and inspirational!

Nature and Security

Nature and Security by Luna McCarthy

When I first came to Guatemala, I was surprised to see all the barbed wire. It’s funny how now I don’t even notice it. Barbed wire and broken glass are fairly good security measures here. The funny thing is that because all of the houses have metal doors, much of the security threat comes from access to the terrazo…since almost all of the houses have an open space in them somewhere.

This ivy/barbed wire combination is one that I really like. Not only is it more aesthetically pleasing, there is a small part of me that might giggle a little if a would-be robber were to cut his hands open on the “ivy”…evil, I know.

Tertulianos by Jose Moreno

As breathtaking outside as it is inside. One of these days I will go in and ask if I can take some photos for those of you who haven’t seen the inside of this lovely building!

Architectural Detail

Close Up by Luna McCarthy

The architectural detail of many of the buildings in Xela, especially in El Centro is too lovely to describe. I’m not sure if the locals still stop in wonder to look at the detailing, but many a traveler stands in awe (and takes lots of pictures) of the beauty of the edifices of the past.
