While We Are Here

While We Are Here by Jose Moreno

Since we just visited the church in Zunil yesterday, we should take a peek at the Fuentes Georginas Hot Springs, just about 15 minutes up the road from the town. I myself will actually be taking a bit of a vacation in September and staying in the bungalows for a couple of nights.

This great shot of the rebuilt {after Tropical Storm Agatha} springs was taken by guest contributor Jose Moreno.

Just Down the Road by Jose Moreno

Just down the road from Xela is the lovely little pueblo of Zunil, roughly the home of Fuenes Georginas. But the town itself is also home to one of the Maximons and has a beautiful church to see as well.

Every New Beginning

Every New Beginning by Luna McCarthy

…comes from some other beginning’s end. Words from the song “Closing Time” and although a little cheesy, they do have a certain good philosophy about them. Everything has a cycle of time in which it lasts; things are always changing and rarely static. Having said that I want to let everyone know that my partner Kat and I have decided to close Moonkat Dessert Lounge as of Sunday, August 26. We both have some very exciting new opportunities on the horizon and agree that this is the right time to let Moonkat end.

I also wanted to express a heartfelt thanks to you here in Xela who have supported us with your friendship and your business! It has been wonderful to hear people say how much they will miss the best cakes and waffles in town! A remembrance to all that has passed and a toast to the future!

Al Natur by Jose Moreno

In Zone 1, just down from the Dispensa Familar, on 13th Avenida is wonderful little place called Al Natur. Food, coffees and hot chocolates ricos abound! Guest contributor Jose Moreno and I both seem to be on a bit of a food kick, so don’t be surprised if you see more food posts in the coming days! Provecho! 馃槈

Art in Every Corner by Jose Moreno

Xela has so many very talented, local artists on display, whether it be in the street art or in the restaurants; you only have to look around. Here is one of the many, many colorful corners of mural work in Cafe Red, as captured by guest contributor Jose Moreno.

Sabes Delis by Luna McCarthy

There is a new restaurant on 14A in Zone 1 that has very delicious crepes and lunches. I had the most lovely pasta/shrimp salad the other day…and I was so thrilled with it, I forgot to take a picture. 馃檨 But you should definitely stop by and try it out!!

Day After Day by Luna McCarthy

Day in, day out, the vendors are at the market. Come rain or shine, they are there, dedicated to selling their goods, no matter how great their stall is or how tiny their baskets are. In so many ways, I admire their tenacity and fortitude.

Up and Down

Up and Down by Luna McCarthy

The changing of the flag, in Parque Central. I had to sneak around them to get a shot, just with my phone. The female officer kept shooting me very suspicious looks.

Moto Mania!

Mo' Moto! by Jose Moreno

I often fantasize about getting a moto, to get around town a little more quickly. The thing is that the roads in Xela can be just a little treacherous. Many roads in town are quite nice, but certainly not in the historic centre as there are restrictions about road improvement, due to the age of the city centre. Yes, cobblestone is beautiful, but there must be something that can be done to improve the roads in Zone 1 without altering the “historic” value too much. Thoughts…?

Dos Lobos Panaderia

Dos Lobos Panaderia by Jose Moreno

There is a fabulous new bakery/cafe in Xela and the owners also happen to be lovely people. Josh and Kathleen, the owners of Dos Lobos Panaderia serve up amazing snickerdoodle cookies, luscious European style bread and (get this!) Chai flavored cupcakes, among other things! Located on 2a calle, 14a-34, in Zone 1, lucky me, they are just down from Moonkat!
