Grandma’s Kitchen

Grandma's by Luna McCarthy

There is a little spot in the Calvario end of Xela, that has the BEST home cooked tipico food in all of the city. For years I didn’t actually pay attention to the name of the place, because when I met the owner, she was introduced to me simply as “Abuelita”. To this day I still don’t know her name, but the name of the comedor is “Tienda de Leon”. And in every sense of the word, this woman is a Grandmother. From her affectionate, genuine pleasure to see you and ask how you are, to her home cooked rice, beans, and milanesa, to her enormous bear hugs as you come and go, this woman represents love, affection and all that is heart and home. Not to mention the awesomeness of the “beer girl” dining rooms and the great prices on litros of Cabro!!
