Sign, Sign…Everywhere a Sign…

Signs by Luna McCarthy

It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, every city uses a lot of space for advertising. Sides of buildings, enormous posterboard signs, even the glittery-light-up kind of signs can be found. But along the roads that lead out of town are usually where the most advertising is seen; these signs hawk everything from services to shops to jewelery to Cemaco to which churches to go to.

Calvario Ferris Wheel by Jose Moreno

Carnival and Feria, which means party time in Calvario! All of this just seems to be a reminder that Semana Santa is right around the corner…are you ready for Easter?

Cafe Nim Sut

Cafe Nim Sut by Luna McCarthy

Guest contributor Jose Moreno has taken some great pictures from either inside of or from the upper patio Cafe Nim Sut, see Mother Love and The Start of the Evening. Located close to Pension Bonifaz, this cute little cafe actually is not as little as one might imagine. There is the first little lounge room at the entrance, then the outdoor patio, shown here. I haven’t eaten there, so I can’t give an opinion on the food, but the prices seem in the reasonable range. But the 3rd story patio alone makes me want to go and hang out.

Mugs, Mugs, Mugs

Mugs by Luna McCarthy

In keeping with my love of markets and all things “house-y”, I must say that I have a huge appreciation for how the vendors in the markets sort and display their wares. Most of the time, everything is displayed in such neat and space-efficient ways, that not only do I marvel at the goods themselves, but at how they are presented. I bet that the vendors would be super worthy Tetris opponants!

Off Market Day

Off Market Day by Luna McCarthy

Most people go to the market on Friday in San Fransisco el Alto, to make a day trip, perhaps to buy some textiles or some traje. Although many people don’t go on “off-market” days, just to hang out, this is exactly when this picture was taken. The classic church stands in the background, while there is a vestige of a market…NOT the actual market, but there ARE vendors who sell fabric, buttons and all kinds of sewing accessories and the like. It is certainly a different sight than full-on market day, when you can’t even see the ground!

Carnival!

Carnival by Luna McCarthy

Carnival is upon us and all over the city, especially in Calvario, there are celebrations and parties. Rides and churros galore for those who seek it! Personally, the churros are my favorite part 😉 There are costumes and breaking cascarones…the kids go a little crazy this time of year, but it is fabulous!

**Editor’s note – Sorry I neglected to post a picture yesterday, there was a bit of a family emergency that happened. All is well, it was just a day of running and dealing with things, my apologies.

Peligroso?

Overpass by Luna McCarthy

There are so many of these pedestrian overpasses in Xela. Of course they exist in other countries as well, but I have never liked them, no matter where I’ve lived. Would you cross a 4 to 6 lane highway using one of these, or do you think they are far too dangerous to hang out on, having a late morning conversation, like the people in the picture are?

Concert at The Park Take Two

Concert at The Park Take Two by Jose Moreno

A few days ago, I posted the photos “Concert at the Park” from one of our readers Salvino Terranova. Another of our readers Lena, had asked for more information regarding the band, while in the meantime, I received this photo from guest contributor Jose Moreno.

Here is the information I know of the band: The name of the group is Grupo Pacha K’ anchay, and they advertise as playing “The Sounds of the Andes”. They may have a consistent gig playing at the Centro Cultural by the pillars (near Parque Central) every Fri. at 4pm, but this is not confirmed. Most of the musicians are chapines, perhaps one of them is from Peru and a few of the musicians seen here also play at Pequena Fonda on occasion.

That’s the scoop, live from Xela, this is Luna McCarthy reporting! 😉

Urban Setting

Urban Setting by Jose Moreno

Although previous pictures have been posted here on XDP before, the new Cafe Red does have one of the coolest interiors in Xela. There are different rooms, all with different feels. The patio shown here, has a very urban feel, with fantastic graffiti (done by a local artist) and wondrous swirling colors. Other rooms have a very chill atmosphere and are perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine.

Colors! by Luna McCarthy

As summer is almost upon us and Semana Santa is right around the corner, every inch of Xela is starting to look brighter and happier. Even the tired paint on the little tiendas out by the Rotunda seems just a bit more vivid!

Flowers for You by Jose Moreno

I love holidays, but even more, I love romance and love and celebrations of pleasant, happy emotions. Who doesn’t? And what girl wouldn’t LOVE to receive this gorgeous gathering of flowers, so beautifully captured by guest contributor Jose Moreno? Ahhhh, yes please!

Feliz Dia del Cariño!!

Love by Luna McCarthy

Straight from the market in la Demo, to you!! Dia del Cariño is similar to Valentines Day, but (I personally think) is a better version than the one in North America. Here in Guatemala, we celebrate with everyone who we love…our parents, friends, partners, siblings, coworkers and the like. There can be a romantic feeling to the day, but when EVERYONE is celebrating, less people are likely to feel left out. I like it!
