Twists and Turns

Intersection by Luna McCarthy

One of the fabulous things about Xela, that lends itself to that “old world” feel, is that there are tons of quirky, unusual intersections around town. Intersections that are on the diagonal, or that have 4, 5 or 6 roads leading into one spot are not uncommon. As a person who doesn’t own a car, I’m not sure how I would feel about them, if I had to drive them. What are the rules for a 6-way stop?

  1. I spend more time trying to figure out how to get through the towns than I spend driving between the towns. I think the problem is that sheet metal is pricey in Guatemala and the locals see the signs as a resource. I started through Coban heading east, following the signs through town, halfway through-no more signs. Got a nice tour… It is like that everywhere in Guatemala, road signs are rare so when you come to a six way, consult Google Earth on the laptop and hope for the best.
