At 5:40 am yesterday, Argentine folk singer Facundo Cabral was terminally shot in Guatemala City while en route to the airport. A full CNN English article can be read here:
Current President Alvaro Colom has declared 3 days of mourning and there have been protests, marches and memorials all over the country. These photos were taken in Parque Central. Many Guatemalans feel great sadness and mourning, not only for this horrible event, but for the loss of life that occurs far too often in this country. I saw a comment on a Guatemalan friend’s Facebook page today, that conveys a strong emotion:
“HECHOS LAMENTABLS DIA A DIA QUE ENLUTAN A MI PAIS. MUY BIEN DE TODOS SALIR EN UNA MARCHA PASIVA POR EL ASESINATO DE FACUNDO PERO AMIGOS DIA A DIA MUERE UN GUATEMALTECO POR QUE NO HACER LO MISMO …”
Rough translation – Day by day, grievous things happen in my country. It’s very good that we’re all out in a passive march for the murder of Facundo, but our friends die every day and we do not do the same…
Perhaps this unnecessary death will help to light a path for positive change; we can only hope.
