Shine Me Up

Shine Me Up by Luna McCarthy

Shoe shining is a viable business here in Xela. Well, not viable as in it’s going to make a lot of money, but there definitely is a niche market. In this culture, there is a sense of pride in having one’s shoes extremely shiny. Some of the local business men will have their shoes shined twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Since Xela is a dusty town, the formal business-shine must be maintained. Many of the “shoe-shine” men will have their sons working with them during the day and it is not uncommon to see young boys as early as 7 or 8 years old, wandering around busy locations with their polish boxes offering their services and working to support their families, when they should be in school.
