In the Calvario Cemetery are some of the most beautiful statues you will find in Guatemala. Walking along the paths, not only will you see brightly painted tombs and fresh flowers, a brilliant view of Santa Maria and couples walking hand in hand, but you will see finely detailed and angelic statues gracing many of the tombs. The sad truth of the matter is that many of these statues are missing their heads, hands or even entire arms. Some locals attribute this to age, while yet others will tell you stories of the local “delinquents” having their target practice late at night, using either large rocks or guns. Many of the Spanish schools recommend not walking in the cemetery near dusk or later, as it can be a gathering place for local drunks or target-practicing hooligans. During the day however, if you’re in a group of two or more, the solitude, beauty and respect for life and death, not to mention the gorgeous statues can be safely viewed and felt.
