Animal Rights in Xela

A Menagerie of animals and their owners descended on the Central Park in Xela to help raise awareness of Animal rights. An event with music and the chance to socialize with other Animal lovers sponsored by Huellas Duca of Quetzaltenago. The March for Animal rights is the first march for animal rights in Guatemala.

Many of the people that gathered like Mariano Viana and his dog Rocko Maragrito (shown in the main photo) hope this event would also bring awareness to the situation of animals living on the streets. With dog populations in Guatemala are rough estimate at best, but for anyone that has been to this country dogs are all over the place.

To find out more about Animal rights here in Xela and in Guatemala check out Huellas Duca at facebook and learn more about this issue and what you can do to help.

Note: I wanted to thank Pinar for inviting me to continue shooting and work on Xela Daily Photo after she left to take her new job in Costa Rica. It has been a pleasure to work with a talented photojournalist like Pinar and I hope I can continue the quality reporting and photographic work that has been on Xela Daily Photo. Good Luck Pinar!

  • @Josh, thanks for making us aware of the animal rights campaign efforts in Xela. Thanks, I really appreciate it.

  • I really thought it was an interesting topic to touch on. I don’t think I’ve ever really heard about animal rights here in Guate.

Great pictures Josh! It´s great to be informed of these types of events, since most of the time they´re not covered by the local newspapers.
